A Day of REST

restWe could all use one! Sounds so good this time of year, doesn’t it? By now we’re all feeling a bit rough around the edges, rushing against the clock to pull things together for the holidays. Seriously! Who has time for a day of rest?

Rest is more than just a good idea. It’s one of the original Ten Commandments of God for His people.

“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” Exodus 20:8

Every age group was included. This command was not meant just for people over-the-hill!

“the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.”

Imagine: permission for everyone to just stop all the activity–even cooking–and JUST REST! No-guilt type of rest. Needed rest. Faith required rest. Commitment to rest. AHHH! Sounds so yummy, doesn’t it? I’m trying to visualize the power of what it must have been like for an entire community to observe this at the same time! WOW!

The Sabbath is a day of worship.

The Sabbath is more than just a day of rest.  It’s a day of admitting that

we can do nothing of value without Christ in the equation…

a realization that anything good in us comes from God. It’s also a day of grace: of reflecting on what has been accomplished in us and through us via God’s amazing grace. God required this Sabbath rest of Himself. Even HE rested on the 7th day and reflected on His accomplishments and progress from the previous 6. Shouldn’t WE? Rest?

The Sabbath is a stepping stone.

It’s a day to collect our thoughts, begin anew by hearing from Him. We lay everything before God, gain wisdom from the previous week and receive direction for the next. We take a deep breath, inhaling His peace, strength, insight; exhaling our angst, disappointments, and self-reliance. It’s a fresh start!

The Sabbath requirement is an innate need.

God worked this into the very soil of the earth from which we were created.

“the land itself must observe a Sabbath rest before the Lord every seventh year.”

If the land must rest, then so must we. We were made from the dust of the earth. We were made for Sabbath and Sabbath was made for us. It’s not just a command; it’s a blessing from God our Creator.

Let’s thank God for giving us a day of rest. Let’s literally take this day or set aside one day each week to truly treat our mind, body, spirit as our Creator God intended. Doesn’t it make sense?

There would be much less distress, anxiety, illness, disease, and relationship issues if we would just enjoy this amazing gift of God: PERMISSION TO REST!

PASS IT ON!

My concern here is for the endless activities we schedule for our children. Are we expecting too much? Training them to worship the clock–the idle of busy-ness? Let’s not just keep this awesome requirement for ourselves. We must teach the next generation. Let’s incorporate A DAY OF REST into our family routine. God intended it for our good and His glory!

Have a Blessed Sabbath, whatever that looks like for you, your family and no matter what day of the week you are able to observe it!

We Are Woven!
