White Flags: I Surrender “My Children”

White Flags is a new series stemming from our Woven Weekend 2014: FREEDOM. I will be discussing some of the heartfelt needs that our women wrote on their flags, carried to the altar, and surrendered to the Lord. Maybe the answer to someone else's need will uncover your need! TODAY'S FLAG: "I give you my children. They are yours. You are theirs. I release my hold & control."   I remember it so well. My daughter was away at camp. I was home alone: worrying, begging God to take care of my girl. After all we had been through together, I couldn't bear it if anything should happen to her. After all, just one year prior I had lost my husband to suicide. Everything in my life had changed. It seemed I had every reason to be concerned about Nicole, she was only fourteen and a victim of sexual abuse. Suddenly I was confronted with God's response: Don't you trust me with your daughter? Wow! That hit me like a brick! Do you not realize that she was MINE from the beginning. I gifted her to you. Hmm...that put a whole new spin on things! I never thought of that, but TRUTH revealed my inner fears, [...]

Secrets: Exposing and Preventing Child Sexual Abuse

Secrets: we all have them. We call them the "skeletons in our closet" of life. They stir shame, guilt, emotions that we can't control or label. We're afraid of "what others will think" if our secrets are exposed. The skeleton is a great metaphor: we feel naked to the core. But when we speak it? It loses its grip. Its power diminishes. We are mobilized toward freedom. We can overcome! The most amazing thing about sharing our story is the discovery that we are not and were never alone. Though we feel like we are the only one, we uncover the truth that EVERY one has a secret, a story; and often, our stories have a common theme. We are WOVEN into a tapestry. Threads of our past intertwine, provide common ground for conversation, for understanding our present situations. As we weave our tales and share our journeys, hope is awakened, freedom comes to light, healing is in sight. I'm inspired by you. I pray you are inspired by me. I don't know what you're specific situation is, but because of my life situations, I can empathize with you. This weekend, I'm both humbled and exalted for this opportunity to [...]

FREEDOM! Woven Weekend REcap

Beautiful. Transforming. Powerful. All apply to our Woven Weekend 2014: FREEDOM! It was truly a work of the Holy Spirit. The journey toward this event was rugged and ever changing. God was definitely putting His thumbprint on the outcome. The first "oops" was an "error" in location, which resulted in Transformation Round One. Witnessing the body of Christ coming together to prepare our Newark Naz REAL LIFE location for this event and for the future of this congregation was beautiful. The transformation was amazing! It was the perfect space for our event...a God "oops"! Another "oops"... our Worship Leader Melissa Anderson was quarantined until Saturday morning. What are the odds of that? We put to death our plans and sought God's plan. Recording Artist Heather Evans stepped right in and blessed us with her vocal and acoustic giftedness Friday night. What a powerful strummer and vocalist! Transformation Round Two: No more "oops"!  The beauty of our Friday night service was to the tune of "White Flags". The sight of every woman in the place waving a white flag of surrender was a visible welcoming of the Holy Spirit. To make the vision complete, two of our women marched the aisles with huge white flags and placed them near the [...]

FREEDOM: Grit & Grace

The Grit & Grace of Freedom. That's what God is placing on my heart for our upcoming Woven Women's Weekend in April. Our Woven Weekends have proven to be a spiritual landmark along the road of life for those who attend. Awakening. Challenging. Transforming. Reviving. Renewing. New friendships are formed. Old friendships are deepened, strengthened. God carves His name on our hearts. He whispers His call as our spiritual ears are perked and alert to hear His voice. It all begins with the hospitality of our Dream Team. We love to love on women and, of course, that includes hugs and food. Our hearts are ready to worship. Melissa Anderson and her band will take us once again to the throne of grace. She's experienced the grit. That's what makes her such a powerful voice for grace. Grit & Grace: it's truly the message of freedom. My daughter and I will be sharing our journey of grit that led us to unfathomable grace. This subject is not limited to any one life circumstance. This is an all-inclusive topic. No matter what life throws at you...God is walking on water, tossing you a lifeboat of grace. It's your opportunity to embrace FREEDOM. Freedom [...]

Breaking News: Woven In JAPAN!

Three of us dressed in Yukata (like a Summer Kimono) with a Japanese Kindergarten teacher we work with. Yes, Woven has traveled to the other side of the earth and landed in: JAPAN!! What a blessing to meet their leader TASH HORNER via email. (Tash is the blonde in the picture.) I will let Tash share a bit of history about this group of Woven Women... We are all part of a Christian English Program called "Wakakusa" in Tamura City (about 4 hours north of Tokyo). The founder of the program is a Japanese man who became a Christian and took over his mother's Kindergarten. At first he hired just one English teacher who would live with him and his wife and work at the kindergarten. Now it's grown to 12 men and women who live separately from the founder and work in the local public schools. In Japan, relationship is very important so we are committed  to teach English for two years and be part of the community. As a team we meet together for a weekly dinner and meeting, and bible study. Despite spending time together frequently, we sometimes miss meeting each others' spiritual needs due to the pressure [...]

Woven Quiet Retreat

Another Quiet Retreat has come and gone, but the results and reviews linger on. Some arrived as newbies, having no idea what to expect; some even wondering if they could succeed the "quiet" aspect. Others have taken a vow to never miss this annual event, though as first-timers, they didn't realize what "quiet" meant! For those, we extended our usual 24-hours to 48...and we still longed for more! Some of our first-timers this year announced they could stay for weeks or even a month: they were so in love with this experience of God's presence and peace. Our theme: JOY. However, in all my preparation to lead these women to the JOY of the Lord, I discovered the route was suffering. Suffering brings surrender. Surrender brings us face to face with our unfailing God. His presence is sheer <JOY>! We must be still, silent and stoop low enough to find it! Is it any wonder that the woman we relate most with suffering is Mother Teresa? She's the perfect example of one who lived in utmost humility and servitude---and with great JOY! The Simple Path was the Rule of Life for her Sisters of Charity. It's a way of life that flows in the fruit of [...]

Apple Pies & Gifted Hands

Twas another beautiful evening at The Courage House this week, as our Woven Women shared some love and our Gifted Hands. Woven Leader Yvonne Hammond, proprietor of Village Victorian Scrapbook Retreat, shared her giftedness with hands-on training in baking pies...from scratch!! It was All-Hands-On-Deck as we set up stations and the process began. While some were mixing their pastry, others were cutting, peeling, coring apples, and still others were mixing the sugar and spices. From start to finish...the ingredients were transformed into a personal sized pie for each of the residents. These evenings together are much bigger than just a fun night of getting acquainted. We are teaching life skills that empower them to do something with their own bare hands...to boost their self-esteem...to know that they are loved. Woven Leader Kitty Roahrig invested extra effort into making this more than a one-time event. She's put together a folder for each woman with instructions for each project we've taught them. This will be something they can do as often as they like within their own family circle once they leave The Courage House and move forward in life. The true value of the evening together was bigger than learning to make pies. It was really about working together [...]

God Bless You ~Happy New Year!

"God bless you!" We mouth these three simple words to people in passing, on greeting cards...even when someone sneezes! We've said it/heard it so often that it's become a hollow expression, limiting it's impact to a worn-out phrase, "Have a nice day!" But let me tell you, this is no trite cliché! Say it out loud, my friend. Give each word the weight it deserves. The entire Bible boasts of blessings...and it's opposition: curses. Disguised in these three little words is the power that moves mountains, sets captives free, breaks curses and changes lives for eternity! On this eve of a New Year, let's feast on these "blessings" from God. Don't expect to swallow them in one big gulp! They are quite a mouthful! It will take some time to digest them. After all, they proceeded from the very mouth of Jesus as food for thought in his Sermon on the Mount! You're blessed when you're at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule. You're blessed when you feel you've lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you. You're blessed when you're content with just who you are--no more, no less. That's the moment you find yourselves [...]
